Skin Cancer Prevention

As the sun starts poking out, we know that you’ll be poking out of your house, eager for that summer sunshine. But we just want to make sure you are taking necessary precautions to protect your skin.

Each year, more than 3.5 million people are diagnosed with skin cancer, most of which are caused by UV rays. In addition, wrinkles, sagging skin, leathering, and discoloration can be intensified from the UV rays. The Skin Cancer Foundation always recommends using a sunscreen of at least SPF 15 (but preferably higher) every day, but this is only part of what will help protect you best.

You should also:

• Stay in the shade, particularly from 10 AM to 4 PM

• Stay away from tanning and UV tanning booths

• Do not stay out so long that you get sunburned

• Protect your skin with clothing

• Protect your eyes and face by wearing a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses

• Receive a professional skin exam every year

REMEMBER:

When applying sunscreen, make sure to pay extra attention to sensitive places  such as the scalp, neck, ears, hands, and feet!

2012 Relay for Life

Relay for Life is annual overnight relay-style event that takes place in locations all over the world to “celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.” Throughout the night, teams of people camp out around the track and take turns walking around the track.

It is a great community event complete with food, games, and activities. The night is always kicked off with a Survivors Lap in which everyone celebrates the victories over cancer. Then, after dark, lost loved ones are honored at the Luminaria Ceremony where a bag filled with sand and a candle is placed around the track for each person and a lap in silence is walked.

Finally, the Fight Back Ceremony challenges individuals and teams to take personal commitments—from getting a screening test to quitting smoking—to fight back against cancer.

Relay for Life is happening in the community this summer:
